Pourtype

macOS menu-bar app

Type what you copied.
Copy what you see.

Some fields and dialogs block paste. Pourtype types your clipboard into them as real keystrokes. It also copies text out of anything on your screen, even a picture. Everything stays on your Mac.

Three things it does

⌘⇧V

Type the clipboard

Some websites and dialogs will not let you paste. Copy your text as usual, click into the field and press the shortcut. Pourtype types it in for you, one key at a time. Line breaks go in as Shift+Return, so chat boxes do not send early.

⌘⇧C

Grab text

Drag a box around any text on your screen, even text inside a picture. Pourtype reads it on your Mac with Apple Vision and copies it. It reads Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English and Japanese.

History

Find it again

Everything you grabbed or typed is kept in a searchable list on your Mac. Copy it again or type it again. Clear it whenever you like, or keep it for 7, 30, 90 or 365 days.

Questions

How do I type into a field that blocks paste on Mac?

Copy the text, click into the field and press Command-Shift-V. Pourtype types the clipboard into the field as real keystrokes, so it works where paste is blocked. While it types, the screen is frosted except the window being typed into, and Esc stops it at once.

How do I copy text from an image on Mac?

Press Command-Shift-C and drag a box over the text. Pourtype recognises the text on your Mac with Apple Vision and copies it to the clipboard. It reads Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English and Japanese.

Is it safe? Does it send my data anywhere?

Pourtype runs locally. It makes no network requests and collects no data. Text recognition happens on your Mac, and your history is stored only on your Mac, where you can clear it at any time. The source code is on GitHub.

How do I stop it while it is typing?

Press Esc. Typing stops at once and your keyboard and mouse are released. It also stops by itself if another app comes to the front. In a password field, press Control-Option-Command-Period.

Does it work with Chinese, Japanese and Korean text?

Yes. Pourtype can type Chinese, Japanese and Korean text, and emoji. For grabbing text from the screen it reads Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English and Japanese.

Can it type into password fields?

Yes, with one limit. In password fields macOS turns on Secure Input, so the keyboard cannot be held and Pourtype falls back to plain typing. Control-Option-Command-Period stops it.

Can I change how fast it types?

Yes. Hold Up or Down to change the speed from 3 to 150 characters per second, and Left or Right to change the rhythm from steady to random.

Can I change the keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. In Settings, click a shortcut and press the new combination; it needs Command, Control or Option. The defaults are Command-Shift-V to type the clipboard and Command-Shift-C to grab text.

Which languages is Pourtype in?

The app is in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Japanese, and follows your Mac's language.

How much does it cost, and how do I get it?

Pourtype is planned for the Mac App Store at US$2.99, one-time. It is not on the App Store yet. It needs macOS 14 or later. The source code is on GitHub under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license: source-available and free for personal and noncommercial use, not open source.

Private by design

Pourtype runs locally. It makes no network requests and collects no data.

It asks for Accessibility access, to type and to hold the keyboard and mouse while it types, and Screen Recording access, to read the text inside the box you draw. Input is held only while it is typing.
